With 90 per cent of residents speaking English and left-hand driving, Cyprus has been hailed as one of the best places for Britons to retire.
The Retirement Property Guide estimates that over 60,000 foreign retirees live on the island, many of them British.
Cyprus is known for its warm, sunny climate, but other attractive features are its affordable property prices, low income tax on pensions and no inheritance tax.
In addition, the law is based on the English legal system, crime rates are low and British television is available via satellite.
The country was a British colony until 1960 and residents report that this influence is still evident.
In related news, Jet2.com has announced a new route from Leeds Bradford airport to Larnaca in Cyprus to meet demand.
The service will begin in May 2009, with flights on Wednesdays and is one of eight new services the airline will offer. |
